SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Any combination of the following signs and symptoms should be investigated by a behavioural optometrist.

Eye signs and symptoms

  • Headaches
  • Blurring
  • Excessive blinking
  • Red eyes
  • Rubbing eyes
  • Double vision
  • Eyes "just don't look right" especially when reading
  • Eye turning
  • Discomfort especially after prolonged computer use
  • Any other changes in vision

Performance signs and symptoms - including schoolwork

  • Frequently skips or repeats lines when reading
  • Tilts head or closes one eye when reading
  • Has difficulty copying from the board
  • Avoids reading and near work
  • Omits small words
  • Writes uphill or downhill and/or with poor spacing
  • Misaligns digits in columns of numbers
  • Holds reading material too close
  • Has a short attention span
  • Has difficulty completing assignments on time
  • Has an abnormal pencil grip
  • Inaccurate copying
  • Discrepancy in WISC scores (lower performance or speed of processing subscores)
  • Drop in performance
  • Progress not matching potential
