SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Any combination of the following signs and symptoms should be investigated by a behavioural optometrist.
Eye signs and symptoms
- Headaches
- Blurring
- Excessive blinking
- Red eyes
- Rubbing eyes
- Double vision
- Eyes "just don't look right" especially when reading
- Eye turning
- Discomfort especially after prolonged computer use
- Any other changes in vision
Performance signs and symptoms - including schoolwork
- Frequently skips or repeats lines when reading
- Tilts head or closes one eye when reading
- Has difficulty copying from the board
- Avoids reading and near work
- Omits small words
- Writes uphill or downhill and/or with poor spacing
- Misaligns digits in columns of numbers
- Holds reading material too close
- Has a short attention span
- Has difficulty completing assignments on time
- Has an abnormal pencil grip
- Inaccurate copying
- Discrepancy in WISC scores (lower performance or speed of processing subscores)
- Drop in performance
- Progress not matching potential
